When do you need to call an electrician? Can't you just install a light fixture yourself, for example? That all depends on your level of comfort. In the case of installing your own light fixture, some critical steps need to be observed, such as turning off the power supply before removing the old fixture, disconnecting the wires, connecting the new wires, and finally mounting the new fixture. If you have ANY doubt, don't try to teach yourself on the job. It's taken years for an electricians to learn and practice their trade, so for the sake of safety and avoiding frustration, we don’t advise you add electrical tasks to the list of DIY projects.

ELECTRICAL WIRING
Wires are just like the blood vessels that bring blood to the organ, in this particular case, the electricity to the fixture or appliance. If you’re doing home renovations, or like most households have internet, or maybe if you’ve decided to install a hot tub inside or outside of your home, all of those and more involve some complex electrical wiring tasks that should not be performed by anyone other than the most experienced licensed electrical contractor. Taking the above example of the hot tub installation, after obtaining the specified permit, adding an extra circuit breaker to the main one is required . If the electrical wiring is completed improperly, this will end in electrical surges and possibly a fire. We'll ensure everything is performed to code and abides by safety standards set by the ESA, and therefore keep you and your family safe.
Electrical wiring in your home or business can include other systems such as electrical panel wiring, computer networking and cabling, and wiring for a smart home security system. The latter is a newer category and you might ask how does smart home security work? Basically, any device powered by electricity will be hard-wired and connected to a main computing system and monitored or controlled remotely. Smart alarms, smart doorbells, smart CCTV and keyless door locks are some examples of these devices. This contemporary system supports home automation and your family’s safety by not having to think about your doors being locked or security being armed. In the event of a fire, a smart thermostat can initiate the shutdown of the fan and vents, thereby potentially saving lives. Call our Windsor electrical contractors to properly wire your home - your peace of mind will be put at ease and your monthly heating bills can even be reduced dramatically.
In some old homes built between the 1900s to 1940s, there could also be knob and tube wiring. This poses a fire hazard because the wire’s sheathing isn't approved for contact with today’s home insulation. Most insurance companies won’t even insure a home that also has this old sort of wiring. So if you’re in the market for buying an old home built in the start of the 20th century, make sure to look into knob and tube wiring replacement. If you’re looking into buying a home built in the 1960s to 1970s, there’s a risk you'll be buying a house with aluminum wiring. An aluminum wiring house can also create a possible fire hazard because aluminum becomes defective quicker than copper. Ignored and poor connections in outlets, lighting fixtures and switches cause the aluminum wiring to overheat, which can cause a fire. Insurance companies also are nervous about insuring this sort of home. So it's wise to consider an aluminum wiring replacement if your home still has this old wiring system in place.

ELECTRICAL REPAIRS
Most dwellings need at some point some sort of electrical repair. A number of them may cause you to scratch your head in confusion wondering what’s causing the malfunction. Let’s take a typical scenario. You've got dead outlets but breaker not tripped. What do you do now? How do you troubleshoot this one? Or what about if you have a tripped breaker? Save yourself the frustration and call us to get to the root of the matter . We’re available for emergency repairs too.
Here’s a typical question once you move into a brand new house or are renovating for an investment home: Should I upgrade my electrical panel? Alternatively, you may search cost to upgrade to 200 amp service. To address the first question, if you’re constantly plugging many of your devices or appliances into one power outlet through power strips or extension cords, you'll want to update the main distribution point for electrical circuits so you don’t overload the circuit breaker, thereby reducing fire hazard risk. To deal with the second question, feel free to contact us for a quote. We may need to assess your home to provide you a far better idea of whether you must update your main service panel and provide you an estimate of an electrical panel upgrade cost. We’ll also educate you on the differences between a fuse box and a breaker, and whether it might be wise to replace an existing fuse box.
The control panel isn't the sole location where a circuit breaker would be needed. A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), or Residual Current Device (RCD) shuts off electrical power when it senses an imbalance between the outgoing and incoming current. So a GFCI outlet prevents us from receiving electric shocks and may be installed in a vicinity of the home where there's tons of moisture.

FAQs:
Should i attempt the electrical work myself? Why do I need to hire an electrician?
We encounter many property owners who desire to take on DIY work on their home or business. We commend them for their ambition; however, they must ask themselves a couple of questions before attempting these projects themselves. The first question in regards to electrical work is: what is your past experience/training in this field? If the answer is little to none, stop what you're doing and call your local licensed electrician. A second question is: what exactly would you be saving (in terms of cost, headache, time) if you were to do the job yourself? If the savings is a couple of hundred dollars, but the risk of a job done properly is higher, it really is not worth it, as the headache and time factors are actually not saved, and fixing a botched job can end up more costly in the end. So, in our humble opinion, it is best to hire an electrician with years of experience and a good record to take on these projects.
should i upgrade my electrical panel?
Many modern homes utilize at least a 200amp breaker panel to service the home's many power requirements. If the home is many decades old and you have lower than a 200amp electrical panel, or you have an old school fuse box, the energy demands of newer appliances may warrant an electrical panel upgrade, otherwise you risk imminent or frequent shortages.
what should i look for in an electrician?
First and foremost before all other considerations, look to see if the electrical contracting company has the proper certification. In Ontario, it means have an ECRA/ESA license to legally perform electrical work in your home or business. Even a master electrician cannot perform work on your property unless they work under an electrical contracting company such as Electricians Windsor. Second, look at the range of services and whether the electrical contractor has sufficient experience in that particular service. Ask questions and request references if needed. Third, look for signs of a reliable contractor, things like good communication and showing up on time for appointments.
i need work done for my office. can i call just any electrician?
You'll need the expertise of a commercial electrician. Many commercial electricians can easily work on residences, but the same cannot necessarily be said of residential electricians. Additional certification and training is required to be able to handle the nuanced systems in an office or building. Our team at Electricians Windsor specializes in both residential and commercial, so if you need repairs, installations or upgrades for your business, please consider our commercial electrician experts.
Past customer testimonials:
We needed a service panel upgrade because our home has been turned into a dupliex and we needed more power - Electricians Windsor did a great job on our service panel along with other complicated wiring jobs.
- Flavia W.
I would like to take a moment to sing the praises of the licensed electrician that was sent to work on my home's electrical panel. We had just moved in, and it clearly did not provide enough amp, so I called this company and they sent someone to upgrade it right away. Professional, experienced and reliable. That's all I ask, and that's what I got.
